OCOEE, Fla. – May 5, 2017 – On Friday, April 28, Innovation Montessori Ocoee (formerly known as Montessori of Winter Garden Charter School) officially marked the start of construction of a permanent facility on its 18-acre campus with a groundbreaking ceremony. The new school campus is located at 1610 N. Lakewood Avenue in Ocoee, Fla. and the groundbreaking ceremony was attended by more than 40 special guests and students including Ocoee Mayor Rusty Johnson and City Commissioners, members of the Governing Board of Directors and PTO Board of Directors as well as representatives from Orange County Public Schools (OCPS) and Building Hope, the Washington D.C. based organization that is developing the project and has secured funding for the project among other distinguished guests.
“This day represents a huge milestone for our charter school and the exceptional public Montessori education we have become known for as we start construction of the permanent facility on this beautiful 18-acre campus in Ocoee,” said Sherilyn Moore, Governing Board President, Innovation Montessori Ocoee. “Six years ago our school began with its initial charter in a rented suite in a strip mall with a vision to provide Montessori education to children in a public setting. Today we offer a public Montessori education to children from PreK – seventh grade and next year we’ll be adding eighth grade and a complete middle school experience to our growing enrollment of more than 300 students.”
The new campus is currently programmed for three buildings on the 18-acre campus totaling approximately 46,000 square feet of indoor learning space. An existing 4.5-acre nature preserve will remain as part of the student experience. In addition to the preserve, the development team carefully selected more than 200 trees to maintain a pristine and peaceful environment around the buildings.
“I grew up a couple blocks from the school’s location and am thrilled to have this thriving school and successful education model in our city,” said Mayor Rusty Johnson, City of Ocoee. “The City Commissioners and I have carefully thought through this project and support it and all the students and families who will come to our City to learn and play both now and in the years to come at Innovation Montessori Ocoee.”
“Innovation Montessori Ocoee is at the heart of our mission at Building Hope – we help quality charter schools like this one plan, develop and fund critical learning environments for children,” said Joseph Bruno, President, Building Hope. “The Head of our Florida office, Richard Moreno, and Vice President of Development, Dru Damico, have worked tirelessly on this project along with our other staff, to help make the vision of the Governing Board of Directors and Administration a reality at this beautiful new campus,” said Bruno.
In August, the 8,000 square foot Primary building will open its classrooms to students in PreK through Kindergarten along with office space, child-run gardens and a dedicated play space. The two-story, 34,000 square foot Main building and classrooms are slated to be completed by the end of December to open in January for grades one through eight, including Music, Art, and Science rooms and the main administrative offices. Additionally, a 4,000 square foot Multipurpose building will open with the Main building and offer flex space for various school programs and larger student gatherings.
Other exterior features include environmentally friendly rain-fed gardens, solar energy elements, walking paths, a kinetic energy-generating hopscotch array and additional fitness options for the students.
